The 164 was a prestigious Alfa Romeo with a sedan body built from 1988 to 1997. The 164 can be considered the first "new generation" Alfa Romeo and is the first large Alfa model to be powered by front wheels. The car was a success in Europe and was aimed at buyers who wanted an affordable and powerful sports sedan but were intimidated by German and BMW-Benz competitors. The 164 designs were created by the Pininfarina company right after their last project, the Ferrari Testarossa. That's why Ferran's influence is evident in this sedan - the sedan has sharp, dynamic shapes with a characteristic line running across the side and continuous taillights. The car has a truly memorable design. The 164 was built on a Type Four chassis, which was also used by the Lancia Thema, Fiat Croma and Saab 9000. The car also had some of the most advanced technologies of the time - automatic climate control and an electronically controlled suspension that ensured a compromise between handling and comfort. The 164 also had highly regarded engines that were among the best at the time.
