The second-generation Ford Probe was also produced on the Mazda GE platform like the Mazda MX-6. The more powerful version of the Probe GT had a 2.5 L V6 engine, 4-wheel disc brakes, fog lights and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Both engines produced had dual camshafts (DOHC) and are combined with a 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission. It was originally planned to produce a 3rd generation Probe on a Mondeo chassis, but the name Cougar was chosen and produced in conjunction with the Mercury Cougar model. The Probe GT magazine's Car and Driver was named the 1993 car.
Probe sales have never been very good - 30,079 units were sold in 1996, while already in 1997 sales fell to 16,777 and it was the worst-selling model in the entire Ford range in 1997, resulting in the car being discontinued.
