The new Altima has grown tremendously - the interior has become so spacious that it even surpassed the class of the higher Maxima interior. The Altima became the most spacious mid-size Japanese sedan, as well as the largest in the class and its fuel tank. The press appreciated the updates and the Altima was praised for its new style and large space. The Altima also has an improved multi-link rear suspension and better brakes. Criticism was leveled at the car’s interior due to poor quality, cheap plastic, others disliked the driving characteristics due to not feeling the road, as well as due to the increased wheelbase, increased turning radius.
The Nissan Altima SE-R version was produced with a V6 engine with 260 hp (194 kW), 340 Nm of torque, 18-inch rims and direct exhaust. According to Topspeed.com tests, this car was able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds!

In 2002, the Nissan Altima became the North American Car of the Year.

In the Virginia International ring in 2002, the Nissan Altima went around the track in 3: 09.75 seconds and that was 48 times between all recorded times.
