In an international poll of the Century Car, the 911 ranked 5th after the Ford Model T, Mini, Citroen DS and Volkswagen Beetle. It is the most successful car with an air-cooled, rear-mounted opposition engine that is close to its ancestor, the Volkswagen Beetle. The 911 original had 25 hp over its lifetime, more than 30 times what today's 911 turbo models have! It is the second oldest sports car name, the only one being the Chevrolet Corvette. In 1974, the 911 model underwent 3 significant changes: first, the engine volume was increased to 2687 cm, and at the same time the torque was increased. Second, the bumpers were designed to absorb impact energy, they so successfully blended into the car’s silhouette that it remained unchanged for 15 years. Third, the K-Jetronic NVS Bosch fuel injection system was introduced.
It was during the production of this generation 911 that a decision was almost made to halt the development of the model and to produce a powerful 928 model with a V8 engine instead.

The engine of this car is air cooled.

In 1982, a 911 version with a convertible body was introduced.

In an international poll of the Century Car, the 911 ranked 5th after the Ford Model T, Mini, Citroen DS and Volkswagen Beetle.

In 2004, Sports Car International magazine named the Porsche 911 the seventh best sports car of the 1970s and 1980s.
