944 replaced the 924 model. It was a successful model produced in coupe and convertible bodies with both atmospheric and turbo engines. The 944 was also better equipped, more refined, more comfortable than the 924, it had better dynamic, braking properties. The car has an almost ideal weight distribution (50.7% for the front axle, 49.3% for the rear) due to the fact that the transmission is located at the rear and the engine at the front. This gave the image of a well-balanced, predictable, well-managed car.
Porsche 944 was voted among the top ten in 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1986 by Car and Driver magazine, and in 1984 the car was voted the best-managed production car in America.
