The Boxster name is intended to emphasize the type of engine used by Porsche, an opposing, horizontally spaced boxer-type engine. The Boxster used a number of common details from the larger 911 - it had the same trunk cover, front fenders, headlights. Its 2.5 L M96 engine shared the same architecture as the 3.4 L 911 model engine. It was the first water-cooled Porsche non-front-mounted engine. In fact, the engine was mounted in the middle, unlike the 911 engine, which is mounted at the rear. This combination provided a low center of gravity, ideal weight distribution and neutral handling characteristics, which are especially appreciated for overcoming sharp turns.
It was the first water-cooled Porsche with a non-front-mounted engine.

The Boxster was the best-selling Porsche from 1996 until 2003, when the Cayenne SUV was introduced.

The car has won many awards, including the following:
  • Selected as one of the top ten in 1997-2003 (according to Car and Drive magazine).
  • Car of the Year (according to Automobile magazine).
  • 1997 sports car (according to Motor magazine).
  • The best roadster in the world (according to Autocar magazine).
  • The best sports car of the decade (according to The Philadelphia Inquirer magazine).
  • 1997 Canadian car.
