The new third-generation Clio, introduced in 2005, is built on a platform developed in conjunction with Nissan and shared with the Renault Modus, Nissan Micra and Nissan Note models. The car became significantly larger (4,000mm long) and 130kg heavier than the Clio II and almost outgrew the supermini car class. This is Renault’s attempt to insert the Clio into the more luxurious space. Renault is well known as a manufacturer of extremely safe cars. As a result, the new Clio also achieved a 5-star EuroNCAP safety rating and joined other Renault family cars with a maximum rating (except the Kangoo and Twingo). The Clio was recognized as the European Car of the Year 2006 and it is believed that it is this model that will set the benchmark for quality, safety and style in this class. The most powerful version - the Renault Clio Sport has an atmospheric 16-valve 2.0 L engine with a 6-speed gearbox. The engine develops 197 hp (145 kW) / 7250 rpm and a top speed of 215 km / h and reaches 0-100 km / h in 6.9 seconds.
The Clio was recognized as the 2006 European Car of the Year. To date, the Clio remains the only car to have been voted European Car of the Year twice, in 1991 and 2006.
