The Rover 75 was produced with a sedan and station wagon body. The 75 model was started as an upgrade to the Rover 600, although the press mistakenly thought the 75 would be based on the BMW 5. The car quickly won praise for its ride quality, interior and traditional look. Critics of the car considered its design too “retro” in style and too little “sporty,” but 75 won a number of international awards for “most beautiful car”. It was fitted with a 4.6 L V8 unit derived from a Ford Mustang and rear-wheel drive. However, sales were disappointing as it was unable to compete with the BMW 3 Series or Audi A4.
