Subaru Outback, 1994 - 1999
In 1994, production of the first-generation Subaru Outback with the same Legacy 2.2 L EJ22 engine began on the base of the second-generation Subaru Legacy station wagon. The Subaru Outback model differed from the Legacy with minor cosmetic changes - a two-color body, larger wheels and bumpers, and plastic guards around the wheel arches. In 1996, the Outback models were upgraded to increase ground clearance, similar to the roof raised in the Legacy Touring Wagon, and received an additional 2.5 L 155 hp (116 kW) EJ25 engine. The changes were made because customers wanted a more exclusive, more SUV-like car. This is how the new car class was born - these are all-terrain vehicles (extremely good in the case of the Subaru), very similar to simple all-rounder, sporty but economical enough.
