The Corrado is the successor to the successful Scirocco model with a three-door coupe body and 2 + 2 seats. Corrado used the Volkswagen B3 platform at the rear and the A2 platform at the front, which it shared with the then Golf Mk2 and Jetta models. Not surprisingly, the Corrado shares many mechanical parts with other Volkswagen models. The Corrado was able to offer exceptional handling, power and was listed as one of the “25 cars you must drive before you die” (Car magazine). All models had an innovative rear spoiler that raises automatically when the car reaches a certain speed (approximately 45-65 miles per hour). The most powerful version had a highly regarded 2.9-liter, 12-valve, 190 hp (140 kW) VR6 engine. The VR6 was revolutionary in its time because it combines the best features of V-shaped and linear motors. It has 2 cylinder blocks arranged at an angle of 15 °, but shares one cylinder head. This arrangement allowed the engineers to accommodate the six-cylinder engine in the same space as the four-cylinder engine. The Corrado was praised by the press, but the car did not receive much attention among buyers. Partly because of the high price, partly because the Volkswagen brand was not well known as a sports car manufacturer. But even to this day, the car has a lot of loyal fans.
