The Lupo was introduced in 1998 to fill a gap in the VW model range when the VW Polo grew significantly and competitors introduced their "little ones" - the Ford Ka, Opel Agila and Fiat Seicento. A version of the Lupo, the Seat Arosa, was produced. The Lupo was produced with a variety of engines, including the GTI variant and the ultra-economical 3L version, making it the world's first production car to consume less than 3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers on average. This was achieved with a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder diesel engine with turbocharger and direct injection (data 61 hp and 140 Nm). Production of the magnifying glass ceased in 2005 when it was replaced by the VW Fox model.
