The BMW 1 Series is a small luxury family car produced with 3 and 5 door hatchback, coupe and convertible bodies. It is the smallest, cheapest BMW and is now produced on a separate E87 platform, unlike previous BMW 3 Series compact models, which, albeit small, were built on the BMW 3 Series base. The new Series 1 car is the only one in its class to have rear-wheel drive and a longitudinally mounted engine. This model, however, has a lot in common with the larger E90 3 Series BMW - it shares many components, including the front MacPherson strap and rear trapezoidal suspension, and so on. BMW says the car has more than 60% of the components borrowed from the E90. It is a well-managed car - it has no competitors in this class in its class and is a bit reminiscent of the older BMW 3 Series BMW E36. During the first year of sales of the 1 Series, the car immediately became one of BMW's most successful products. Only the 3 and 5 Series BMWs sell better. This is a great result for a car that is more expensive than almost all of its direct competitors. It is the 1 Series that should be grateful to BMW, which has overtaken another luxury manufacturer, Lexus.
