The BMW 7 Series is a high-end, prestigious car produced with a standard or extended sedan body. The E38 models were offered with either a five-speed automatic transmission or a manual transmission. When production of the E38 was phased out in 2001 to give way to the new E65, sales of the E38 increased significantly as the new BMW 7 Series design was not universally popular. The most powerful variant of the 750iL had a huge 5.4 L V12 engine with 326 hp. The E38 was really popular and could be seen as one of the main actors in the line-up of Tomorrow Never Dies or The Transporter.

This generation of the 7 Series BMW could be seen as one of the leading actors in a number of films such as: Tomorrow Never Dies (750iL), Bumer (Bummer) (750iL), Enemy of the State (740iL), Invictus (740iL), Bad Santa (740iL), Fun with Dick and Jane (740iL), Showtime (740i), The Transporter (735i), Live Free or Die Hard (740i), and The Game (740iL).

As many as 16 cars were used in the film about the famous agent James Bond "Tomorrow Never Dies". The BMW 740iL models were indeed used, but presented as the 750iL. The BMW company also had the rights to use the chase scenes with these BMWs and motorcycles (as well as the BMW model R1200C) in its promotional videos.
