The BMW X3 is a compact SUV, although BMW itself advertises it as a SAV - Sport Activity Vehicle. Given the success of the X5 model, BMW decided to introduce a smaller model that would compete with compact crossovers such as the Land Rover Freelander. Just as the BMW X5 is built on the E39 5 Series platform, so the X3 uses many BMW 3 Series parts, in fact many parts are taken directly from the E46 330xi model. The BMW X3 was initially criticized for its solid suspension, tough, minimalist-style interior featuring cheap plastic, as well as poor passability and considerable price. However, this car is designed to drive on good roads - here BMW feels like a fish in water, in addition, the car has excellent diesel engines, electronically controlled all-wheel drive, and the space is not inferior to the larger X5 model. As a result, the BMW X3 was well-sold and for 3 years was the leader in its class in Germany, overtaking such a titled opponent as the Toyota RAV4.
