The C4 Corvette is known for its snug design. Instead of fiberglass, her body was made of plastic. The double C4 is also the first Corvette to have a tailgate. The interior boasted a new instrument panel with LCD devices that show speed and engine speed. The design of the C4 focused on handling, which slightly affected the ride quality. The 1986 Corvette is known for becoming the first car with an electronic security system, the Pass Key I, developed by GM. To sum up, this model has been warmly welcomed by both drivers and the press and has been praised for its excellent handling, maneuverability in turns, aerodynamic design and power. At one time, this Corvette was recognized as the fastest road vehicle in America (according to Car and Driver Magazine).

The 1986 Corvette is also known for being the first Pass Key I car to be developed by GM.

This generation Corvette was used as a safety car in the Indianapolis 500 race.
