The Lancia Ypsilon was produced on a common base with its cousin the first-generation Fiat Punto. However, unlike its predecessors, the Ypsilon was only produced with a three-door hatchback body. Only 1.1 to 1.4 liter gasoline engines were installed. The most powerful model with a 1.4-liter 12-valve engine was quickly replaced by a 16-valve 1.2-liter smaller but more powerful 63 kW (86 hp) engine. The first generation of Ypsilon received minor upgrades in 2000.
