The Mitsubishi i MiEV (which stands for Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle) was introduced in Japan in 2009 as a result of 40 years of electric vehicle development work. This is the first major step by the Japanese manufacturer in implementing a new strategy aimed at achieving one-fifth of all Mitsubishi Motors cars in the next 10 years. If you think electric cars are impractical, changeable and unsafe, then Mitsubishi is going to prove the opposite to you. The compact MiEV has five doors, four seats, a 246-liter boot, spacious interiors and zero emissions. The mass-produced MiEV does not have the electric motors mounted on the wheels shown in the concept model. Instead, the car has one electric motor mounted on a rear axle with a power of 64 hp (47 kW) and a torque of 180 Nm. The maximum speed reached by the car is 130 kilometers per hour. The vehicle has a single-drive transmission and a 16 kWh lithium-ion battery that can be charged in 14 hours from a 110-volt power supply, in 7 hours from a 220-volt power supply, and in just 30 minutes from a fast charging station. In early 2010, there were 60 such stops across Japan. Mitsubishi says it can travel up to 100 miles with a single battery charge and in normal mode (headlights, wipers, blade and CD player on). However, you can also choose the Eco mode, which reduces the car’s power to 42 hp but allows you to travel longer distances. Preliminary calculations showed that driving 100 kilometers with this car in Lithuania would cost about one euro. So what is MiEV on the road? Quiet and dynamic - this is the correct answer. The 200 kg lithium-ion battery is mounted low under the floor, so the stability of the car is good. However, the fact that the MiEV is driven by the rear wheels has narrow tires and the “light” steering wheel does not give the courage to depress the accelerator pedal too hard. Sales of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric vehicle began primarily in Japan, where it is supplied to key legal customers: energy companies, municipal companies and environmental companies. It is planned that 1,400 Mitsubishi electric vehicles will be produced in 2010, but it is already clear that efforts will be made to increase production to 18,000 units as soon as possible and then to 30,000 units per year. This decision was made due to the high level of interest in this car, which is partly due to the various incentives for "green" cars in other countries. As an example, in anticipation of the invasion of these new-generation vehicles into Europe, the British are preparing to triple the number of high-voltage charging stations in London. In addition, parking in the metropolitan area will be free for electric cars, thus encouraging the use of these space-, environment- and resource-efficient little ones.
The car has been awarded a number of awards, including the following:
  • Best Automotive Technology of 2009 (Japan Automotive Hall of Fame).
  • The 2011 car was one of the finalists in the Green Car Vision election, and one of five finalists in the Green Car of the Year election.
  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ranks the i-MiEV as the most economical certified car overall.
