This is a car that has changed the fate of Peugeot. Prior to the Peugeot 205, Peugeot was considered the most conservative of the French trio - it was known for its large and unparalleled charismatic sedans such as the Peugeot 504 and Peugeot 505. The success of the Peugeot 205 was achieved thanks to several factors. In Europe in particular, there was a strong demand for compact cars at the time. Of course, small cars like the Fiat 500 and Mini have been popular for a long time, but the Volkswagen Golf, which appeared in 1974, showed that compact cars can also be the main, comprehensive family car, not just as a second alternative. So, a number of small city cars such as the Ford Fiesta, Opel Corsa, Nissan Micra and Fiat Uno appeared at the time. So the Peugeot 205 was born out of market demand. But another success factor was the car’s excellent technical features - an independent sporty suspension, a wide selection of engines and of course the famous GTI version. And where else is the great car design. The warmly welcomed Peugeot 205 took second place in the 1984 European Car of the Year, second only to the Fiat Uno. However, it soon became clear that the Peugeot 205 would achieve greater market success than its Italian competitor. The most powerful version of the 1.6-liter GTI was introduced in 1984, which had an XU5J engine with 105 hp (77 kW). The unweighted Peugeot 205 GTI was able to accelerate to 100 km / h in approximately 8.5 seconds. A little later, even more powerful engines with 115 hp (86 kW) were introduced, as well as a 1.9-liter GTI version with XU9JA engine, which reached 128 hp (94 kW). At the time, the Peugeot 205 was considered the benchmark among sporty little hatchbacks to which everyone else equated. Unfortunately, never before has any other sporty Peugeot achieved such popularity, perhaps only the Peugeot 306 GTI-6 variant was worthy of the attention of sports car fans. There was a Peugeot 205 GTI version, but there was also a 205 T16 (or Turbo 16) version. This car was developed as a homologated version of the Group B rally car. True, this car had almost nothing to do with the usual Peugeot 205 except the headlights and taillights, windshield and doors. The entire rear of the Turbo 16 has been cut off, with a three-dimensional tubular frame fitted to the engine. The front part was designed analogously, where only the suspension is mounted. The engine was just a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder that, along with the gearbox, was mounted in front of the rear axle in the center of the car for better weight distribution, which was 45:55 front / rear. A bit of a disappointment was that the engine output was "only" 200 hp (147 kW) at 6750 rpm. and 255 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm, while the rally engine reached all 424 hp! Peugeot 205 T16 with 200 hp engine up to 100 km / h. accelerated in 6 seconds and reached a top speed of 209 km / h. This sports car was thrown into the very heat of a B-series rally race. At the time, Peugeot Talbot Sport's factory rally team was led by legendary Jean Todt, who later led a Formula One Ferrari "supergand" with Ross Brawn and Michael Schumacher in the lead. So little Peugeot not only got lost among the Group B rally monsters, but wiped them all out. During the two periods between 1985 and 1986, the small Peugeot scored sixteen of the 26 possible victories and became the winner in the ranks of both designers and drivers, beating rivals such as the Audi Quattro, Lancia Delta S4 or Ford RS2000. The Peugeot 205 T16 is considered perhaps the best of the B-Series supercars.
