The Peugeot 405 looks similar to the Pinfaffe-designed Alfa Romeo 164, which appeared in production the same year. The 405 was produced with a sedan and station wagon body, front and four-wheel drive, with four-cylinder - three petrol and two diesel engines. The sedan has an excellent air drag coefficient (Cd) of just 0.29, while the station wagon is less sleek with a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.33. In 1993, a special homologated version of the T16 was introduced with the 2.0 L 16-valve turbocharged engine XU10J4TE, which distributes power to all drive wheels - 53% for the front and 47% for the rear. This relatively small engine produces extremely solid power - as much as 200 hp (150 kW) at a turbine pressure of 1.1 bar, and increasing the pressure to 1.3 bar produces all 220 hp. Only 1,061 such cars were produced, 60 of which were for the French police. The diesel engines were 1.9 L (1,905 cc) with 70 hp (52 kW) at 4,600 rpm or the turbocharged 1.8 L (1,769 cc) with 90 hp (67 kW). The Peugeot 405 was used in the British Touring Car Championship and the French Supertourisme Championship. Although the 405 model did not have much success in the UK, in 1994 and 1995 in the French series, this car won both championships piloted by racer Laurent Aïello.
In 1988, the Peugeot 405 became the European Car of the Year by winning this competition by the largest difference in points in the entire history of this competition.

The most radical sports-friendly version of the 405 was the 405 Turbo 16 GR. It was a two-compartment coupe with a center-mounted engine and an electronically controlled central differential. Only four such cars were manufactured after participating in the famous Pikes Peak race and the most prestigious Paris-Dakar Rally. Three of them are currently on display at the Peugeot Museum and the last in a private collection.
