The 959 Group B rally car was designed to meet FIA homologation requirements. During production, it was announced that it was the most technologically advanced sports car ever produced, a true prophet of sports cars. It was one of the first to have an all-wheel drive system and it gave rise to the later Carrera 4 models produced by Porsche; from now on, all 911 Turbo were produced only with an all-wheel drive system. At one time, the 959 had only one competitor in the world, the Ferrari F40. In 1984, three 959s took part in the Paris-Dakar Rally and as early as 1986 they took 1st and 2nd place.
