The 959 Group B rally car was designed to meet FIA homologation requirements. During production, it was announced that it was the most technologically advanced sports car ever produced, a true prophet of sports cars. It was one of the first to have an all-wheel drive system and it gave rise to the later Carrera 4 models produced by Porsche; from now on, all 911 Turbo were produced only with an all-wheel drive system. At one time, the 959 had only one competitor in the world, the Ferrari F40. In 1984, three 959s took part in the Paris-Dakar Rally and as early as 1986 they took 1st and 2nd place.
In 1986, the Porsche 959 was the fastest mass-produced car in the world.

The Porsche 959 is also famous for the fact that two such cars were ordered by Microsoft executives Bill Gates and Paul Allen. However, these cars could not be imported due to the U.S. Import Act. As a result, the cars were stored in the Seattle Harbor for as long as 13 years before the laws were amended and the cars were allowed to be brought in with some restrictions on their operation.
