The second-generation 400 model was built on the base of the Honda Civic hatchback. The Rover 400 was sold as a small family car due to its size similarities to the Ford Escort or VW Golf models, but the Rover stood out for its more luxurious wood-inlaid interior and pricing focused on the larger family car class. A 400 sedan with a huge trunk was also produced. Initially, the Rover 400 was popular (in the UK), but later withdrew from the top-selling 10-dozen and did not match competitors Volkswagen Passat or Renault Laguna.
