The Rover 75 was produced with a sedan and station wagon body. The 75 model was started as an upgrade to the Rover 600, although the press mistakenly thought the 75 would be based on the BMW 5. The car quickly won praise for its ride quality, interior and traditional look. Critics of the car considered its design too “retro” in style and too little “sporty,” but 75 won a number of international awards for “most beautiful car”. It was fitted with a 4.6 L V8 unit derived from a Ford Mustang and rear-wheel drive. However, sales were disappointing as it was unable to compete with the BMW 3 Series or Audi A4.
The Rover 75 was one of the most popular government cars in Britain.

The car has won many awards, including the following:
  • 1999 car, best compact car and best diesel car (according to What Car? Magazine).
  • The best car in the world in 1999 (according to Auto Express magazine).
  • The best business car of 1999 (according to The Journal).
  • The best car imported in 1999 and 2000 in Japan.
  • The best luxury car of the year 2000 (according to the magazine "What Car?").
  • The best luxury car of 2001 (according to Diesel Car magazine).
