The new fifth-generation Passat (B5 platform) went on sale in 1996 in Europe and in 1998 in North America. It is significant in that it again shared the platform with the Audi A4 models and had a classic layout with a front-mounted engine and front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The Passat design uses elements already seen from the new Mk4 Golf, Bora and Mk4 Polo. The curved lines and sloping windshield gave the Passat an incredibly low drag coefficient of 0.27 (sedan model). This ratio is lower than most sports cars, including the just-released C6 Chevrolet Corvette (rated 0.29). The car has a four-lever front suspension and a suspended or independent rear suspension. Once again, the new Passat receives positive reviews for its design, driving characteristics, comfort, space and especially economy. It’s a really practical car. However, the car has been criticized for not the best resistance to breakdowns, let alone minor ones.
