Introduced in 2004, the new S40 and V50 (station wagon) are built on the new Volvo P1 platform. This chassis also uses common units with other cars - Mazda3 and Ford Focus. The S40 was nominated in the 2005 World Car Elections. The in-car linear 5-cylinder engines are developed from the Volvo 850 model. The most powerful S40 has a T5 2.4 L 5-cylinder transverse engine with 220 hp (164 kW), 320 Nm of torque and all-wheel drive. Buyers love the quality of the interior, the excellent quality of the assembly, the comfort, the good handling of the car and all this for a relatively low price.

The Volvo S40 was nominated for the 2005 Best Car in the World. In the same year, the S40 was voted the best compact sports car of the year in Canada, and the best car of the year in South Africa.
