The C5 is a mid-range family car that has replaced the Citroen Xantia. The first-generation C5 is produced as a five-door hatchback or station wagon. Unlike its C5 predecessors, the hatchback silhouette is still more reminiscent of a traditional sedan. The C5 is also the last Citroen to be developed under the leadership of Jacques Calvet (1982-1999), a period when Citroen's philosophy of innovative solutions was "forgotten". The C5 has retained a hydropneumatic suspension called Hydractive 3. The main change is that the system uses electronic instead of mechanical sensors that automatically adjust the car’s ground clearance depending on speed - at high speeds the suspension is lowered to reduce air resistance. When driving at low speeds on uneven roads, the height of the suspension is increased. Manual suspension height control has also been retained. In 2004, the C5 was revamped with a new front and rear, and now the front of the car is similar to the new Citroen C4. The updated C5 has received another innovation - rotating directional headlights.
