Hold on, the nearly five-meter-long large Mazda SUV - the CX-80 - is presented. This is Mazda's first seven-seater SUV on the European market in almost a decade. It will have to compete with extremely serious and often premium segment SUVs, such as Skoda Kodiaq, Kia Sorento or Volvo XC90. If the CX-80 looks familiar to you, it's because the CX-80 is stylistically very close to the smaller five-seater Mazda CX-60 model that arrived in 2022. Interestingly, the Mazda CX-80 and its CX-60 sibling are the only Mazda cars with longitudinally mounted engines. In the case of the CX-80, the engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and i-Activ All Wheel Drive, a permanent all-wheel drive system that sends a bit more power to the rear wheels. Both SUVs are built on the same platform and offered with the same choice of powertrains: a plug-in hybrid and a six-cylinder diesel engine. The Mazda CX-80 has a double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension. In this way, the car is guaranteed maximum stability and comfort. The company's design department currently uses the so-called Kodo design philosophy, which focuses on uncluttered, sculptural forms. If you look closely, you will see that modern Mazda cars are very similar to Alfa-Romeo. Both brands produce really great design cars that don't have sharp characteristic lines like in other brands, the subtleties of design can be seen here simply by the light reflections or by running your hand along the body lines. From the front, the CX-60 and CX-80 look almost identical, with the cars most easily distinguished by the third-row side windows. However, Mazda's new seven-seater flagship is significantly longer than its sibling, measuring 4,995mm in length, 1,890mm in width, 1,710mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,120mm and a turning radius of 5.8 metres. The CX-80 is 250mm longer and 24mm taller than the CX-60, and has a 250mm longer wheelbase. Mazda tried to create a stylish and high-quality interior - for example, the top-end Takumi model has real maple wood trim, Nappa leather upholstery and a stylish fabric-covered instrument panel. The Mazda CX-80 comes standard with seven seats, but a six-seater option is also available, in which case the second row of seats is replaced by two individual seats with the option of having an open space between the seats or a center console with storage, separate climate control controls, USB-C connections and cup holders. Unlike some other seven-seat SUVs, this one has more than enough headroom and legroom for even 1.80cm tall adults in the rear seats. In the third-row seats, the legs of the passengers are raised a little more than they would like, but this is a small drawback. Individual air vents and cup holders in the third row are very nice touches. Two power systems are installed in the new SUV. You can choose between a plug-in hybrid with a 2.5-liter gasoline engine and a small electric motor, or a mild hybrid system with a 3.3-liter inline six-cylinder diesel unit. The plug-in hybrid system has a 2.5 L e-Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine with 141 kW of power and 261 Nm of torque, a 129 kW electric motor and a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. This combination provides a total system output of 241 kW/327 hp and a torque of 500 Nm. This version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. The manufacturer claims that the average gasoline consumption of the plug-in hybrid reaches just 2 liters per 100 kilometers, and it is possible to drive up to 53 km on electric power alone. The 3.3 L six-cylinder diesel engine produces 254 hp. Together with the M Hybrid Boost, the 48 V system also provides high power with excellent fuel economy. The diesel car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 219 km/h, with an average fuel consumption of only 5.7 l/100 km. As we mentioned, both power plants are connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system. The new SUV can also tow a trailer weighing up to 2,500 kg.
