Renault Symbioz, 2024 - present
We have already talked about Renault's fetish for crossovers more than once, you can read about it in the descriptions of Renault Espace and Renault Scenic E-Tech. Now another crossover is presented - Renault Symbioz, which further expands the range of crossovers and is positioned between the Captur and Austral models. In a similar way, the Renault company has come up with an interesting strategy - all its models will become crossovers, there will be many of them, let's say 10-15 models and all of them will differ very little from each other - the range of engines, a little bit of size, some styling or some details. If you like crossovers, and you probably are, then you will definitely find something to choose from. Thus, the 4.41 m long new Symbioz model complements the E-Tech hybrid range of hybrid models, which already includes the Arkana and Austral models. The newcomer also adds to the shelf of E-Tech electric models, which already includes the Megane and Scenic models. Stylistically, the Renault Symbioz is very similar to the Scenic E-Tech and Captur models - it adopts a new design language pioneered by Gilles Vidal, head of Renault design, and which is very clearly visible in the sharp-shaped Renault Rafale model. The most striking part of these cars is the front, which is a multi-faceted grille with the Nouvel'R logo, triangular fog lights on the sides and a high hood with sharp edges. True, the rear Symbioz stands out a bit - the softer shape of the rear lights does not resemble other Renault models. Inside, we see the same dashboard as the third-generation Renault Captur model, which in turn is a copy of the second-generation Renault Captur model, so stylistically the interior looks outdated. Instead, the emphasis here is on technology and practicality - the rear seat can be moved by 160 mm, which gives rear passengers 221 mm more knee space, and the trunk capacity remains 492 liters in this configuration. When the rear seats are unoccupied, the seat can be moved forward to increase the boot capacity to 624 litres, or 1,582 liters with the rear seats fully folded. The trunk does not have a threshold, so it is easy to reach the flat floor and load the largest items. The hybrid drive of the car includes two electric motors - a 36 kW electric motor and an 18 kW high-voltage starter generator. The electric motors are combined with a 69 kW (94 hp) 1.6 L 4-cylinder petrol engine, fitted with an intelligent multi-mode clutchless gearbox and a 1.2 kWh battery. The gearbox has four gears for the petrol engine and two gears for the main electric motor, combining the operation of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor in up to 14 different ways to optimize fuel efficiency. The car is always started in electric mode, so in the city the driver can drive electric up to 80 percent of the time and save up to 40 percent of fuel compared to a conventional gasoline engine. The powertrain is designed so that on the highway the internal combustion engine can drive the wheels directly, without the use of electric motors as in conventional hybrid systems. In this way, Symbioz optimizes fuel consumption in any mode, which reaches an average of 4.6 l/100 km.
