The new small Volvo SUV joins the bigger brothers - the new XC60 and the popular XC90. The third XC-branded Volvo SUV is the first model developed on a compact modular architecture (CMA) platform developed in conjunction with Chinese company Geely. The CMA will form the basis not only for the XC40, but for all Volvo Series 40 models, including the upcoming electric cars. Obviously, it won’t be easy for the new XC40 to win its place under the sun, as so far Volvo can be said to have not produced compact SUVs (apart from the not-so-popular V40 Cross Country). At 4425 mm long, 1863 mm wide and 1652 mm high with 21 centimeters of ground clearance (which is more than the larger XC60 and XC90 models have), it is taller and wider than its main competitors BMW X1 and Audi Q3. Competitors include the hugely popular Range Rover Evoque, as well as the "fresh" BMW X2 and Jaguar E-Pace. At the beginning of its debut, the XC40 is offered with two engines - a four-cylinder turbodiesel 2-liter 190 hp or a turbocharged 247 hp engine of the same displacement, with front or all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive version is equipped with an electro-hydraulic BorgWarner / Haldex coupling. Later, for the first time in Volvo's history, three-cylinder petrol engines, hybrid and fully electric versions will appear. The design of the car is quite restrained - the traditional concave radiator grille on the front, the easily recognizable Volvo LED lights and the window line shooting boldly upwards at the rear pillar are the only more interesting details of the cogger. Inside, the small Volvo has a solid interior that is reminiscent of other Volvo models in style and materials. A 9-inch diagonal screen stands out in the center, and a wide 12.3-inch screen in front of the driver. Volvo’s interior features ample space, and passengers sit here higher than their competitors, making the car comfortable to drive in a city where it will undoubtedly be used most often.
