Volvo EM90, 2024 - present
Every time a manufacturer steps into a new, untested market segment, it is very interesting to see how they will succeed, and if that manufacturer is also a representative of premium cars, it becomes doubly interesting. Meet the Volvo EM90, the company's first minivan, with which the manufacturer will aim to satisfy the unconventional needs of car buyers. It turns out that the new Volvo is not created from a blank sheet - it is built on the basis of the Chinese Zeekr 009 monocoque. In 2022, Zeekr, a brand belonging to the Chinese concern Geely, introduced the Zeekr 009, a luxury large single-seater, and soon shared the basis of this car with the Volvo company, which is also owned by Geely. These cars are technically almost identical, but the car's exterior styling and interior trim have been tweaked to meet the needs of Volvo fans. Therefore, the Volvo EM90 is not at all the fruit of the work of Swedish engineers, which is somewhat disappointing, but this is the modern reality of cost cutting. By the way, the Volvo EM90 turns out to be not even the first monocoque of the Volvo company. The first was the Volvo Duett produced in the 1950s and 1960s. Later, the Swedish automaker focused more on sedans and station wagons, and the Volvo Duett was discontinued. From the outside, the new Zeekr/Volvo minivan is disguised with all the attributes typical of Volvo models - the same hammer-shaped headlights as the electric SUV Volvo EX90 and a huge illuminated Volvo logo to convince us of its authenticity. In profile, the EM90 features an angular, boxy silhouette with a short front overhang and sloping panoramic windshield. For the rear passengers, Zeekr has installed sliding doors, and at the rear of the car, a vertical tailgate is decorated with a small roof spoiler that houses a third brake light. Inside, the EM90 features a beautiful minimalistic dashboard design uncluttered by buttons and switches and luxurious materials. Despite the minimalist style, there is nothing Scandinavian here either. Front passenger seats are set high, with many controls accessible via a large 14.5-inch infotainment screen in the center of the dashboard. For the passengers sitting in the second row, the car manufacturer has created two extremely comfortable and fully controllable seats with a folding table built into the armrests. Getting into the third row of seats is quite difficult as the second row seats have to be pushed forward. A 200 kW (268 hp) electric motor driving the rear wheels is hidden under the attractive body of the car. It is powered by a huge 116 kWh battery that provides up to 738 km of driving range according to Chinese standards. I wonder how far it will go according to European standards.
