The Volvo V40 was developed as a direct competitor to the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz Class A and BMW 1 Series. The new model continues the tradition of the famous Volvo S60 design - the cars have a very similar front end, and the rear end is almost identical to the Volvo V60 station wagon. The V40 looks really attractive, fresh with nice headlights, a wedge-shaped body, a dynamic rear with interestingly shaped headlights and a double rear window. The Volvo V40 seems to have finally denied Volvo’s image as a company that produced cars of unattractive design. Compared to its competitors, the Volvo V40 is one of the largest in its class, but part of the interior space is sacrificed for style - there is little rear seat space and the narrow boot capacity is only 355 liters (all 45 liters less than the Volkswagen Golf). Inside, the car meets the design of the front panel as two drops of water similar to the Volvo S60. The interior style is Scandinavian modest, but at the same time luxurious. The main screen located in the center console is not controlled by touch, but by switches. The interior quality is not disappointing, although it cannot match the Audi A3. Volvo has always been among the leaders in safety and this model is no exception. The car was rated excellent in EuroNCAP tests. The engine range consists of three petrol engines and three diesels. Petrol engines: 148 hp with a 1.6-liter T3, 2.0-liter with 177 hp T4 and the most powerful five-cylinder 2.5-liter T5 with 360 Nm of torque. Diesel engines are, of course, the most relevant - even the smallest 1.6-liter D2 with 113 hp provides enough power for everyday use, the more powerful 147bhp 2.0-liter D3 engine delivers the perfect combination of power and economy, and the most powerful 175bhp D4 engine won't disappoint sports fans. The Volvo V40 feels great on winding roads because it is extremely manoeuvrable and rigid. The steering works accurately and flawlessly, and the body tilt is not very noticeable. True, the suspension of the car boiler is stiff and is a bit stiff compared to competitors.
