Two is better than one - said French company Peugeot and decided to replace the old 408 and 607 models with the release of one 508. The new car size also blends in between the two, it shares its platform and many engines with the second-generation Citroën C5. PSA Peugeot Citroën produces 508 in China and plans to sell 65,000 units in 2012. Also, the Chinese market is expected to sell almost twice as many 508 as France. This will be the first time in the company’s history that more will be sold in the external market than in France itself. Thus, the 508 is a very serious competitor in the classy family car class and poses a challenge for the Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat. In terms of size, Peugeot is slightly ahead of its Volkswagen counterpart: it is slightly longer (4792 vs. 4771 mm) and wider (1853 vs. 1829 mm). But lower (1456 vs. 1516). Compared to the Peugeot 407, the 508 has a shorter front overhang and a longer passenger compartment. When it comes to the new model, Peugeot representatives emphasize the new design direction and especially the improved quality. Still, the new design is unlikely to surprise customers who have seen it all, but it is attractive, proportionate and balanced, somewhat similar to the 2008 Nissan Altima. The shape of the car is very sloping, the designers obviously aimed to give the four-door coupe the silhouette of a car like the Mercedes-Benz CLS or Volkswagen Passat CC models. There is a clear leap in quality in the interior compared to older Peugeot models - now the Ford Mondeo is ahead of the 508 in terms of material quality and not far behind the Volkswagen Passat or Opel Insignia. The look and comfort of the cabin are the strengths of the car. The instrument panel shapes are no longer as round as on older models. Finishing materials, center console, steering wheel - everything looks complete and attractive. Another advantage is the large cabin space for both front and rear passengers. True, the 473-liter boot is not very large compared to competitors. When choosing the new 508, you can choose one of eight (3 petrol, 5 diesel) engines. The most popular engine, the koger, will be a 2.0 L HDI engine with 163 hp and 340 Nm of torque. In the city, such power is sufficient, and it is not terrible to bend over on the highway (although gearboxes with a slightly faster reaction would be desirable), because already from 2000 rpm. the starting torque peak does not require a lower gear. The most powerful is the 2.2 L HDI engine with as much as 204 hp and 450 Nm of torque! On the road, the car is comfortable enough, quiet, and precise in handling. Overall, the 508 has all the essential attributes needed for a comfortable family car - maybe it will really be your first mid-size car?
