When it comes to Toyota brand cars, we usually get a story without emotions - excellent technical features, excellent reliability, reasonable price, etc. It is, but there is one other Toyota car that is not so much a practical as an emotional purchase, and that is the Toyota C-HR model. The Japanese auto giant presents the second-generation C-HR, as colorful as the first and likely to be the same successful model. With similar broken lines as its predecessor, only this time with a two-tone body, the C-HR strongly stands out from other Toyota models. The front part of the car was adapted from the cute Toyota Prius model, while the rear part stands out for its aggressiveness and extremely high window line. Interestingly, the new model is not larger than its predecessor - compared to it, the new C-HR has become 30 mm shorter and 35 mm wider. With a wide range of models, Toyota is wise to leave different features for different models, so each model has strongly expressed advantages. Let's say the C-HR remained compact because of the more spacious Toyota Corolla Cross, and the Toyota Prius did not become an SUV because it is a city car that does not need increased clearance. Some other manufacturers, mostly from France, do the opposite and combine different models. We think the French are going the wrong way. Although the Toyota company is deliberately lagging behind in the path of electrification of models, claiming that it is not necessarily the only right path, but in the field of hybrid systems they are the best of the bunch. The Toyota C-HR is now available in 1.8L or 2.0L engine options, each paired with Toyota's fifth-generation hybrid system. The lower-powered car has a system output of 138 hp (+18 hp) and CO2 emissions of 111 g/km. The 2.0 L version produces 194 hp (+14 hp) but emits the same amount of CO2. The latter is available not only with front-wheel drive, but also with AWD-i all-wheel drive, which has an additional electric motor on the rear axle, ensuring both better grip and even more efficient dynamics. The positive economy should reach only 4.1 l/100 km. This number seems realistic, and it is worth remembering that this is an average figure. Toyota actually calculates that the efficiency of the car compared to its predecessor will increase more precisely in urban conditions. Plus, it's a hybrid car that you'll never need to plug in. And that's not all, because from now on the C-HR is also available with a plug-in PHEV hybrid drive, which allows you to travel up to 66 kilometers on electricity alone, and the power of the system reaches as much as 223 hp and accelerates to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. It's safe to say that the C-HR is best suited in the city, where it's easy to maneuver in traffic thanks to its relatively compact dimensions and pleasantly responsive steering. The suspension work is not bad, as we expected from TNGA platform cars - sometimes it is a bit too stiff, but it adapts quite well to the city's bumps and potholes, and it holds the road well. The difference between this C-HR and its predecessor is that the suspension works well when you leave the city and drive on faster country roads. The old model felt uncomfortable here, often using too high engine speeds. The fifth-generation hybrid system is quiet and comfortable, which is important because Toyota says the car will be in electric-only mode for more than 70 percent of short trips. The trunk of the C-HR is quite large - 364 liters. Inside, Toyota hasn't deviated from the formula that was a success with the first C-HR, where we find a fully digital instrument cluster and a huge 12.3-inch screen for the infotainment system. True, the basic C-HR has an eight-inch screen. Despite the similar dimensions, thanks to the new generation hybrid system, more space has been given to the rear passengers. Although the changes are not radical, passengers with a height of 1.80 cm will feel comfortable enough to enjoy the trip to the seaside. There's more room here than you'll find in many small SUVs like the Fiat 600, Jeep Avenger or Peugeot 2008. It's true that one thing Toyota's engineers haven't been able to fully resolve is that the rear passengers will still feel claustrophobic and cut off from the outside world.
