The Alfa Romeo 145 and 146 are small family cars. Both cars are built on the same chassis, borrowed from a Fiat Tipo and share the same assemblies and interiors. The 145 is a three-door hatchback and the 146 is a five-door hatchback. These cars replaced the obsolete 33 model. The new models had a spacious and unique interior that attracted a lot of attention. The exterior design continued the Alfa Romeo 164 tradition - sharp style, with elongated narrow taillights. The slightly more conservative 146 model had greater commercial success than the 145, which proved too avant-garde to buyers. Both cars were praised for their sharp handling. The cars in the first series still had old boxer-type engines borrowed from the old 33 model, and the most powerful 2.0-liter Twin Spark engine that was already used in the 155 Alfa Romeo was recently introduced. Finally, in 2000, the cars were replaced with a brand new 147 Alfa Romeo, which was much more commercially successful but lost something of the alpha that the 145 and 146 models had.
