The Probe is built on the Mazda G-Platform, but has different exterior and interior designs. The instrument cluster and front folding headlight mechanisms are borrowed from the Mazda RX-7 model. The Probe was introduced as a luxury coupe car and had to fill a niche market that emerged after the Ford Capri’s exit, and possibly replace the Ford Mustang in the North American market and had to compete directly with the Acura Integra and Toyota Celica. But Mustang fans didn’t accept a front-wheel-drive, Japanese-designed and non-V8-powered car, so Ford began building a new Mustang. The Probe chassis and brake system are borrowed from Mazda, but the suspension has been specially tuned and calibrated to optimize the Probe’s performance from other competitors.
